Cristo Rey Newark High School To Close After School Year Ends

The Archdiocese of Newark, along with the Board of Members of Cristo Rey Newark High School, has announced, with regret, that Cristo Rey Newark will close at the end of the current school year.

Assuring the school's financial stability for the full upcoming school year, within the current pandemic environment, seemed an insurmountable challenge. Low freshman enrollment, coupled with the projected loss of revenue, created uncertainty that the school could be sustained.

"Since 2007, Cristo Rey Newark High School has been a collaborative and faithful member school of the Cristo Rey Network," remarked Cristo Rey Network President and CEO Elizabeth Goettl. "We appreciate the many significant accomplishments of Cristo Rey Newark, including 100% college acceptance for its graduates. We will continue to pray for the success of its students, and trust that lessons learned both in the classroom and the workplace will serve them well as they become the leaders of tomorrow."

The school leadership team and staff are developing an orderly process for school closure, which includes advocating for underclass student placement at local area schools and ensuring the completion of the college placement process for its graduating seniors.

"When conditions are more favorable in the years ahead, the Cristo Rey Network looks forward to our mission returning to the Newark community," said Goettl.

Cristo Rey Newark, like each Cristo Rey school, is independently owned and operated, governed by a Board of Directors, and enjoys partnership with a Religious Sponsor or Endorser. As the Religious Sponsor of Cristo Rey Newark, the Archdiocese of Newark ensures that the school is Catholic in identity and mission and appropriately governed. The determination of Cristo Rey Newark's closure has been announced today as one of ten Archdiocesan school closures.
